511 patients died due to doctors' strikes in Bihar
By Imran Khan---- Patna, Dec 26 (IANS) Repeated strikes by Bihar doctors in the last four years have claimed the lives of 511 patients, but the state government has no plans to cancel the licences of agitating doctors despite a recommendation by the state human rights commission (SHRC).
"The doctors have gone on strike nine times in the state during the last four years," official sources said. The reasons ranged from demanding a hike in the stipend to protesting over a fight with patients' relatives.
"I mentioned the number of deaths due to doctors strike in the state legislative council Tuesday," Health Minister Nand Kishore Yadav said.

Bihar Water Policy to be unveiled in March
Patna, Dec 21 (IANS) The Bihar government will announce its drinking water and sanitation policy March 22, 2010 to mark World Water Day, a state minister said Monday.
The government was working on a draft policy, Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) Minister Ashwani Kumar Choubey said adding that there were plans to introduce a dual water supply system that would supply both recycled and fresh water to the people for sanitation and drinking purposes respectively.
The government would accord top priority to drinking water in the policy, the minister said adding that the draft policy would be circulated among people�s representatives and also be made available on the PHED website for suggestions of experts and public before its formal announcement.
Choubey said the main aim to formulate the policy was promotion of water management, its conservation and efficient use.

'Bihar will be a developed state'
Patna, Dec 19 (IANS) Professionals from Bihar who have made a mark in various fields at home and abroad say the state is changing and will be developed in the coming years.
"Bihar is on the verge of change and development, positive signs are visible," said Sampada Singh, chairman of pharma company Alkem Labs, at a two-day conclave on Bihar that began here Saturday.
"Still, more miles have to be covered by Bihar before it becomes a paradise for investment and development," Singh said after inaugurating the conclave.

Bihar's jail inmates to bring out magazine
Patna, Dec 15 (IANS) The inmates of a Bihar jail along with the jail authorities are all set to bring out a special Hindi magazine in January next year, official sources said Tuesday.
The inmates of Beur central jail here along with the jail officials are busy working on a special Hindi magazine called "Drishtikon".
�This magazine will be a rare one as all the writing or stories will be reported and contributed by the inmates of the jail,� Beur jail Superintendent Omprakash Gupta said.
The inmates chose Gupta as the editor and a jailor named Daniel Dinesh Mitra as the sub-editor. In addition, two trainee jail officials were chosen as news editors. Read more...
